Wire mesh reference tool

Wire Mesh Size Table: Openings, Gauge, Micron & Weight

Compare practical reference sizes before you issue an RFQ. Choose the manufacturing process first, then match opening, wire diameter, material and supply form to the job.

Pick a manufacturing process to avoid mixing woven mesh count, welded opening, perforated pattern and expanded-metal dimensions.

Values are nominal references for early selection and quotation. Confirm material grade, finished dimensions, tolerance, coating and test requirements before production.

Woven Wire Mesh

For filtration, sieving and screen packs. Mesh count means openings per linear inch, not the clear opening by itself.

How to read wire mesh sizes

Choose the measurement that controls your application

A mesh number, opening and wire diameter describe different things. The right starting point depends on whether the job is separation, containment, airflow or load-bearing access.

For plain woven mesh: aperture (mm) ≈ 25.4 ÷ mesh count − wire diameter (mm).
Use the wire mesh calculator
01

Mesh count

The number of openings per linear inch in woven wire cloth. Higher mesh count usually means a smaller opening, but wire diameter still changes the clear aperture.

02

Aperture / clear opening

The open distance between inside wire faces. This is the primary dimension for particle retention, pests and airflow.

03

Wire diameter / gauge

The wire thickness controls strength, weight and open area. Buy by millimetres; gauge is only a reference because charts differ.

04

SWD and LWD

Expanded metal uses short-way and long-way diamond dimensions, plus strand width and thickness. It is not specified by woven mesh count.
