Worked Examples: Hole Pattern and Panel Open Area
These independent geometry examples explain the calculation; they are not listed SKU specifications. Check the actual hole layout and boundary positions for the finished panel. Open area alone does not establish airflow, pressure drop or screening performance.
- 1. Define the Square-Hole Grid
- For a straight grid with equal horizontal and vertical center pitch, perforated-field open area (%) = (clear square side length / center pitch)² × 100. Use the same units and measurement stage for both dimensions. The metal width between adjacent holes is center pitch minus square side length. This formula excludes solid borders and does not describe staggered layouts.
- 2. Calculate Open Area Within the Perforated Field
- Assume a 5 mm square side length and 8 mm center pitch in both directions. The theoretical perforated-field open area is (5 / 8)² × 100 = 39.0625%, or approximately 39.1%. The metal width between adjacent holes is 8 − 5 = 3 mm. These example dimensions do not identify an available SKU or an order tolerance.
- 3. Include the Solid Panel Margins
- Assume a 1000 × 2000 mm panel with a 20 mm solid margin on each of its four sides. The perforated field is (1000 − 40) × (2000 − 40) = 960 × 1960 mm. Using the unrounded field value above, estimated whole-panel open area is 39.0625% × (960 × 1960) / (1000 × 2000) = 36.75%, or approximately 36.8%. This area-based estimate requires confirmation against the actual hole count and boundary layout.
Galvanized Steel: Confirm the Coating Route
Steel Substrate and Zinc Coating
Galvanized square hole perforated metal combines a steel substrate with a zinc coating. The catalog identifies galvanized steel but does not specify the base steel grade, galvanizing sequence or coating designation. State these requirements in the inquiry rather than assuming that all galvanized sheets have the same coating coverage or exposure suitability.

Coating and Service Conditions
- Continuous galvanized sheet：The steel sheet is zinc-coated before later fabrication. Confirm how punching, cutting and any subsequent fabrication affect exposed edges, and agree the required edge treatment.
- Galvanized after fabrication：Batch hot-dip galvanizing coats the fabricated article. It is a different process from continuous sheet galvanizing; specify the required sequence, coating acceptance and finished opening dimensions.
- Exposure conditions：Describe indoor or outdoor use, persistent moisture, salt exposure, chemicals and cleaning. Select the coating system for that environment instead of treating galvanized steel as a universal corrosion-resistance rating.
