Mesh Count to Opening: Worked Examples
These Monel wire mesh examples use the mesh count and wire diameter of each listed SKU to illustrate regular square-weave geometry. The calculation converts a mesh count per linear inch into a nominal clear opening; confirm the required construction when ordering.
| Mesh per inch | Wire diameter (mm) | Calculated opening (mm) | Calculated opening (μm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 0.25 | 25.4 ÷ 40 − 0.25 ≈ 0.3850 mm | 385.0 |
| 80 | 0.12 | 25.4 ÷ 80 − 0.12 ≈ 0.1975 mm | 197.5 |
The calculation shows four decimal places in millimetres and one in micrometres. The SKU matrix rounds its catalog aperture separately, so the displayed precision may differ. Mesh count is not a micrometre value, and a nominal opening is not a tested absolute particle-retention rating. Pressure drop and allowable loading require separate evaluation.

Choose and Specify Monel Wire Mesh
Use this Monel wire mesh buying guide to define the screen you need, investigate an existing failure and prepare an inquiry that includes both geometry and operating conditions.
Choose Your Purchasing Path
Start your Monel wire mesh inquiry with the information you already have. Each path identifies the additional details needed to review the proposed screen.
1.Reorder an Approved Specification
- Provide with your inquiry
- Send the previous drawing, material designation, SKU or sample reference, quantities and destination. Identify any change in the process or installation since the last order.
- Confirm before ordering
- Match alloy grade, wire condition, weave, opening, wire diameter, finished dimensions and document requirements to the approved specification. A matching mesh count alone is insufficient.
2.Replace a Damaged or Corroded Screen
- Provide with your inquiry
- Describe the existing Monel wire mesh or alternative material, time in service, damage location, operating medium and cleaning cycle. Include photos and the support or clamping drawing.
- Confirm before ordering
- Review the failure information before selecting a replacement material or geometry. Separate corrosion, loading, installation and blockage questions rather than assuming a material change addresses every cause.
3.Specify a New Screen
- Provide with your inquiry
- State the screening task, target particle separation, fluid composition, temperature, flow and available space. Provide a drawing or the dimensions of the supporting assembly.
- Confirm before ordering
- Agree the proposed Monel wire mesh grade, weave, opening, wire diameter, support arrangement and inspection basis. Identify any sample or assembly testing required before production approval.
Review a Damaged or Blocked Screen
Use these checks to prepare a Monel wire mesh replacement inquiry. They are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis or a prediction of replacement life. The linked alloy bulletin supports the corrosion context; mechanical and installation causes need review of the actual assembly.
| Observed issue | Checks to discuss | Record for the review |
|---|---|---|
| Wire thinning, pits or corrosion near contacts | Compare the medium and cleaning chemicals with the specified material. Check idle immersion, deposits and sheltered contact areas. | Record chemistry, concentration, temperature, running and shutdown conditions, damage locations and material identification. |
| Local holes, tearing or distorted openings | Review support spacing, differential pressure, loading changes, contact damage and the proposed wire condition. | Provide photos, the support drawing, normal and peak differential pressure, operating events and the original mesh specification. |
| Broken wires or damage at the edge | Check cut edges, clamping contacts, tension, movement and the installation sequence against the drawing. | Mark the affected edge and fastening positions. Include edge treatment, frame dimensions and photos before and after installation if available. |
| Blockage or reduced flow | Review the feed, deposits, opening, open area, cleaning method and operating pressure history. A different alloy alone does not define a blockage remedy. | Record particle or deposit information, clean and fouled flow conditions, differential pressure and cleaning frequency. |
Record Operating and Shutdown Conditions
Review Monel wire mesh through the full operating cycle. The alloy producer distinguishes flowing seawater from stagnant exposure; include shutdown and cleaning conditions as well as normal production in the material review.
- Normal Running Conditions
- Identify the fluid, concentration, temperature, aeration and flow pattern at the screen. Include contaminants and normal or peak differential pressure for the assembly review.
- Shutdown and Idle Immersion
- State whether the screen stays submerged, is drained or is flushed during stops, and describe typical idle periods. Monel 400 can experience crevice and pitting corrosion in stagnant seawater.
- Deposits and Support Contacts
- Mark areas that collect deposits or remain sheltered at clamps and supports. Supply the support materials, contact details and cleaning access so those local conditions can be reviewed.
- Process and Cleaning Changes
- List cleaning chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and exposure times. Identify any change in feed or cleaning practice since the previous screen was approved, and agree how compatibility will be checked.
Marine Screening and Chemical-Process Filtration
Select Monel wire mesh by the screening task and operating environment. Use the purchasing paths and condition checklist to describe marine water screening, chemical-process separation or a process-fluid strainer. Review the proposed material and supporting assembly together.

Monel 400 Material and Mesh Selection
Nickel-Copper Alloy: Specify UNS N04400
Monel 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy designated UNS N04400, used in marine and chemical processing. The element ranges below are catalog family data, not a complete material specification or a heat-specific analysis. Agree the grade, wire condition and required material records with the quotation. MONEL is a trademark of the Special Metals group; the designation does not identify the offered wire's producer.
- Ni: 63-70
- Cu: 28-34
- Fe: ≤2.5
Match Geometry and Corrosion Conditions
- Flowing and stagnant seawater:Alloy 400 has low corrosion rates in flowing seawater, while stagnant exposure can induce crevice and pitting corrosion. Use the operating and shutdown checklist to capture the installation's full exposure cycle.
- Chemical exposure:The producer reports resistance to many reducing media. Review the complete process and cleaning chemistry at the stated concentration and temperature; acid and alkali environments require individual assessment.
- Opening and open area:The worked examples beside the SKU matrix explain regular square-weave geometry. Confirm the weave and opening tolerances separately from particle-retention, pressure-drop or loading requirements.
- Wire condition and installation:Cold working changes alloy 400 strength and hardness. State the required wire condition, finished form, edge treatment and supporting structure. Send normal and peak temperature, exposure duration and mechanical duty for the proposed assembly to be reviewed.
Monel Wire Mesh Specification and Acceptance Checklist
Specify the wire material and finished woven cloth separately. ASTM B164-26 covers nickel-copper alloy rod, bar and wire, including UNS N04400; it does not by itself define the finished mesh opening or screen performance. Agree the applicable wire condition, cloth tolerances, inspection method and document package with the quotation. The checklist below sets out purchasing questions, not a declaration of certification.
| Check item | Specification basis | Include in your RFQ | Agree for acceptance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy and wire condition | Monel 400 / UNS N04400 | Grade, wire condition and applicable material specification | Required chemistry, wire properties and material records |
| Weave and clear opening | Mesh count, wire diameter and aperture | Weave, nominal geometry, units and opening tolerances | Measuring method and permitted variation in each direction |
| Finished dimensions | Required width, length and edges | Dimensions, quantity, edge treatment and installation drawing | Dimensional tolerances, edge condition and support interfaces |
| Service conditions | Actual fluid and mechanical duty | Medium, concentration, temperature, flow and cleaning cycle | Proposed material and construction reviewed against the stated duty |
| Inspection and traceability | Order-specific acceptance requirements | Requested certificate type, inspection records and heat traceability | Written inspection criteria and the agreed document package |
